We are excited to announce our upcoming Driver Challenge event in partnership with the Lee Co. Sheriff’s office on Friday, October 11, from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM at Edison Mall Parking Lot  at the Macy’s Entrance in Ft. Myers.
This event is open to all MAC licensed and permitted drivers who will be using their own vehicles, and those interested in pursuing a driver’s license in the future.
The MAC Driver Challenge is an event designed to help autistic adults develop and enhance their driving skills in a supportive and structured environment.
It includes practical, hands-on experiences as well as educational components, focusing on the unique challenges that some autistic individuals may face while driving.
Here’s what the MAC Driver Challenge entails:
  • Driving Course Instruction: Participants receive guided instruction on a closed driving course. This helps them practice key driving skills in a controlled environment, allowing for real-time feedback and coaching.
  • Mock Traffic Stop: This component simulates interactions with law enforcement during a traffic stop. Participants learn how to handle these situations calmly and effectively, which is crucial for their safety and confidence.
  • Seat Belt Convincer: A safety exercise designed to emphasize the importance of wearing seat belts. Participants experience the impact of a low-speed collision in a controlled setting to reinforce this critical safety measure.
  • Roadway Safety Class: This educational session covers important topics related to driving safety, including rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and strategies for handling various driving scenarios.
  • Lunch: Participants have a break for lunch, which also serves as an opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and discuss what they’ve learned so far.
The MAC Driver Challenge is not only about improving driving skills but also about building confidence and preparing participants for real-world driving experiences.
It’s tailored to the specific needs of autistic adults, providing a comprehensive approach to driving education that takes into account both practical skills and social interactions on the road.
Location: Edison Mall, 4125 Cleveland Ave, Fort Myers, FL 33901 (There will be an area of the parking lot sectioned off specifically for this event in front of Macy’s.)
